Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or notched after it has been tempered. Every hole and notch for the patch fittings and lock has to be made before tempering. That means a broken frameless door is replaced with a new panel made to exact measurements and hardware positions. Measuring carefully on site, including the hardware cut-outs, is the most important step.

What we check before ordering new glass

• Whether the existing patch fittings, pivots and floor closer can be reused or are worn out.
• Whether the floor closer is level and holding the door at the right position. A closer that lets the door swing too far can put stress on the glass.
• Whether the top pivot and header are still aligned. A misaligned pivot can stress new glass in the same way it stressed the old.

When to replace the whole patio door instead

If both panels are fogged, the frame is bent, the track is worn through and the weatherstrip is gone, you can end up paying for most of a new door in repairs. At that point, a new patio door makes more sense. We will lay out both costs side by side.
