Our Step-by-Step Process – Wooden Doors Repair and Restoration Services
-
Step 1 We carefully remove the door from hinges and replace it with a temporary non-operating door. The door is brought back to our shop where we then mask any glass and unaffected door edges.
-
Step 2 Your old finish is stripped away using a commercial stripper and a good bit of elbow grease. After cleaning this away, we begin sanding the wood to remove the old stain. We hand detail all the moldings, edges, and corners. Any cracks and separations are filled. A stain and sealer is then applied. After the stain and sealer has dried, the first coat of finish is brushed on by hand.
-
Step 3 The door is sanded with a fine grit sandpaper, wiped clean and the next coat of finish is applied.
-
Step 4 After the final coat is dry, the door is lightly sanded, polished, and readied for re-installation.

Wood Door Restoration in Vaughan
Drive through Woodbridge or Kleinburg and you will see more solid wood entry doors than almost anywhere else in the GTA. Tall double doors in mahogany or oak, arched tops, carved panels and leaded glass are common on custom homes built from the 1980s onward. Maple, Vellore Village, Concord and the Vaughan side of Thornhill have their share too. These doors are expensive to replace and usually worth saving. Wood door restoration brings back the finish and fixes the structure, and it costs far less than a new custom door.
Restoration is not just a new coat of stain. A proper job looks at the wood, the joints, the glass, the frame and the hardware together, because a fresh finish on a door that still leaks or still swells will fail again in a season or two.
What Goes Wrong with Solid Wood Entry Doors
Finish failure
Exterior varnish and stain break down under ultraviolet light. South and west facing doors in Vaughan take full afternoon sun, and the finish goes chalky, cracks and peels, usually starting on the lower panels and the bottom rail. Once the finish is gone, bare wood turns grey and starts taking on water. This is the most common reason people call us, and caught early it is a refinishing job, nothing more.
Splits and checking
Wood moves with humidity. In winter the house is dry inside and wet outside, so a solid door is pulled two ways at once. Panels can split, glue joints open up and fine cracks called checking appear in the surface. Small splits can be glued, clamped and filled. Larger ones may need a panel or a section of stile replaced.
Rot at the bottom rail and frame
Water runs down the face of the door and sits on the bottom rail and sill. Over time the end grain soaks it up and rots from the inside. Push a screwdriver into the bottom corners of the door and the base of the jamb. If it sinks in, there is rot. Localized rot can be cut out and replaced with matching wood or an epoxy repair. Rot in the frame is covered on our door frame repair page.
Swelling, sticking and sagging
Heavy wood doors sag on their hinges, especially wide doors with large glass panels. A door that sticks only in summer is swelling at the edge, often because the top and bottom edges were never sealed. Rehanging with heavier hinges, longer screws into the framing and sealing all six sides of the door fixes both problems.
Leaking glass and leaded lites
Decorative glass in a wood door is held in with stops and glazing seal. When the seal dries out, water gets behind the glass and into the wood. We reseal or replace glazing and can replace a failed insulated unit.
Exterior Front Door Refinishing: How It Is Done Properly
A refinish that lasts follows a set order. Skipping steps is why many refinished doors look tired again after one winter.
- Remove the hardware. Handlesets, knockers and kick plates come off so the finish goes on evenly and seals behind them.
- Strip or sand back to sound wood. Failed finish has to come off completely in the weathered areas. Sanding over peeling varnish only traps the problem.
- Repair the wood. Fill checks, glue loose joints and replace rotted sections before any finish goes on.
- Brighten and even out the colour. Grey, sun-damaged wood is treated so new stain takes evenly with the protected areas.
- Stain and seal. Use an exterior grade finish with UV protection, in several thin coats, on the face, the edges and the top and bottom.
- Reinstall and adjust. Hardware goes back on, hinges are tightened and the door is checked for a clean close and seal.
Weather matters. Exterior finishes need dry days and moderate temperatures to cure, so most full refinishing in the GTA is done from late spring to early fall. Sometimes the door can be taken down and refinished off site, with a secure temporary closure in the opening.

Stain or Paint on a Wood Front Door?
Stain and clear finish
Stain shows off the grain, which is the point of a mahogany or oak door. The trade-off is maintenance. A clear exterior finish in full sun usually needs a light sand and a fresh top coat every couple of years to stay healthy. If you keep up with it, the door can last for decades.
Paint
Good exterior paint protects wood better than clear finish and needs less frequent attention, because the pigment blocks ultraviolet light. It is a sensible choice for a softwood door, a door with a lot of old filler or patches, or a door that will never be stained again. Once a wood door is painted, going back to stain means stripping it to bare wood, so decide carefully.
A storm door or overhang helps either way
A wood door under a deep porch roof can last generations. One fully exposed to weather will need more upkeep no matter what finish it has.
Door Repair in Woodbridge, Maple and Kleinburg
Woodbridge has a large number of custom and semi-custom homes with double wood entry doors, many of them with an arched transom. The common problem there is the active door sagging and the inactive door’s flush bolts no longer engaging, which leaves a gap between the two doors. We adjust or rehang the doors, reset the flush bolts and replace the astragal weatherstrip. Our Woodbridge door repair page has more on that area.
Kleinburg’s estate homes and the older village houses often have heavier, one-off doors made by a millwork shop. Parts for these cannot be ordered off a shelf, so repair is about careful woodwork rather than swapping components. Maple and Vellore Village are mostly 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, where wood doors are often a mix of solid wood slabs and wood-look fiberglass. We will tell you which you have before quoting.
For other door problems across the city, see our main Vaughan door repair page.
When Wood Door Replacement Makes More Sense
We restore wood doors whenever it is worth it. Replacement is the better choice when:
- Rot runs up through the stiles and rails, not just the bottom few inches.
- The door is badly warped and will not seal no matter how it is hung.
- The frame and sill are rotted along their full length and the door is not special enough to justify rebuilding everything around it.
- The cost of repair, glass and refinishing is approaching the cost of a new door.
If you want the look of wood with less upkeep, a fiberglass door with a woodgrain finish is the usual alternative. Our published starting prices are a front entry door from $999, a steel entrance door with glass insert from $1,199, and a fiberglass door with glass insert and design from $1,499, with free in-home measurement for replacements. Custom-sized double wood doors are quoted individually. See door installation in Vaughan for replacement options.
Vaughan Wood Door Repair FAQ
How do I know if my wood door can be restored?
If the wood is mostly firm and the door closes reasonably square, it can usually be restored. Soft spots, deep splits and warping are what we look at during the free estimate.
How often should an exterior wood door be refinished?
It depends on exposure. A door under a porch may go many years. A door in full sun usually needs a top coat every couple of years. Do it before the finish cracks through to bare wood.
Can you match the existing stain colour?
We can get close in most cases, and refinishing the whole door rather than patching one area gives the most even result.
Do you work on wood interior doors too?
Yes. We repair sticking, split and sagging interior wood doors as well. Our wood door repair page covers interior work.
Our technicians are bonded, insured and police background-checked, with more than 22 years in the Canadian door trade, and estimates are free.
