  • Step 2 Your old finish is stripped away using a commercial stripper and a good bit of elbow grease. After cleaning this away, we begin sanding the wood to remove the old stain. We hand detail all the moldings, edges, and corners. Any cracks and separations are filled. A stain and sealer is then applied. After the stain and sealer has dried, the first coat of finish is brushed on by hand.

  • Step 3 The door is sanded with a fine grit sandpaper, wiped clean and the next coat of finish is applied.

  • Step 4 After the final coat is dry, the door is lightly sanded, polished, and readied for re-installation.

Door Repair in Richmond Hill: Big Wood Doors, Big Loads

Richmond Hill has some of the largest residential entry doors in the GTA. Bayview Hill, Westbrook and the newer streets around Jefferson and Oak Ridges are full of double front doors, 8-foot slabs and tall arched transoms. The older homes around Mill Pond and the Yonge Street village core have smaller doors, but many are original solid wood. Both groups fail in their own way, and most of what we fix on wood doors in Richmond Hill comes down to weight and water.

Why tall wood doors sag

A solid wood or wood-faced 8-foot door is much heavier than a standard steel door. Builders often hung them on the same three hinges and short screws used on a normal door. After a few winters the top hinge pulls away from the jamb, the door drops on the latch side and the top corner starts rubbing. The usual repair is a fourth hinge or heavier ball-bearing hinges, long screws driven through into the framing, and a strike adjustment so the deadbolt throws cleanly again.

Double doors that will not line up

On a pair of doors, one leaf (the inactive one) is held by flush bolts at the top and bottom. When the bottom bolt hole in the sill wears or fills with grit, the inactive door creeps, the astragal no longer meets the active door and the lock stops engaging. Cleaning and re-setting the bolt keepers, replacing a worn astragal and adjusting the hinges usually brings the pair back together without replacing anything large.

Swelling in the shoulder seasons

Wood moves with humidity. A door that closes easily in January and binds in a damp June is telling you the finish has worn through on an edge, usually the top or bottom edge that nobody sees. Water gets into the end grain and the door swells. Planing it to fit is only half the job. The planed edges have to be sealed again, or the door keeps swelling.

Wooden Garage Door Repair in Richmond Hill

Wood carriage-style garage doors are common on larger Richmond Hill homes. They look great and they are heavy. The bottom section takes the most abuse: snow sits against it, salt splashes up from the driveway and the bottom rail rots from the inside out while the face still looks fine.

  • Rot in the bottom section. Small soft spots can be cut out and filled with an epoxy repair, then primed and finished. If the rail is soft along its length, the section usually needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
  • Loose hinges and roller brackets. Screws in wood sections strip out over time. They need larger fasteners, through-bolts or a wood repair before the hardware goes back on.
  • Door no longer balanced. Repairing or replacing a wood section changes the door’s weight. The springs must then be adjusted by a technician. Spring work is dangerous, so please do not attempt it yourself.

We handle the wood repair and the mechanical side together. More on springs, openers and tracks is on our garage door repair page.

Exterior Wood Door Refinishing and Professional Door Painting

People who search for front door refinishing usually mean one of two jobs. One is keeping the natural wood look with stain and a clear exterior finish. The other is painting a wood door that has weathered past the point where stain will look good. The prep is what separates a finish that lasts from one that peels in two years.

What proper prep looks like

  • Hardware off: handle set, deadbolt, knocker and kick plate, so the finish goes behind them and not around them.
  • Failed finish removed down to sound material, not just scuffed. New coats over flaking finish will flake too.
  • Grey, sun-damaged wood sanded back until it is fresh, so stain takes evenly.
  • All six sides sealed when the door is off its hinges, including the top and bottom edges.

When paint is the better choice

If a door has deep weathering, old patches or mismatched replacement panels, stain will show every flaw. A quality exterior paint system hides repairs and handles sun better on a south or west facing entry. You lose the grain, but you gain a door that needs less upkeep. We will tell you honestly which way your door should go.

Custom Interior Doors in Richmond Hill

Interior wood doors are a different job from exterior ones. The common requests we get in Richmond Hill homes are:

  • Replacing hollow core builder doors with solid core doors. Solid core doors block sound better and feel heavier in the hand. They often need a third hinge and a hinge-side adjustment to hang straight.
  • Fitting doors to non-standard openings. Basements, older Mill Pond area homes and renovated spaces often have openings that are not stock sizes. A slab can be trimmed to fit, within limits, or ordered to size.
  • French doors and double interior doors. Office and dining room pairs need careful hinge and bolt setup or they rub in the middle.
  • Repair instead of replace. A door that rubs, will not latch or has a loose hinge is usually a short repair, not a new door.

Door Replacement and Door Installation in Richmond Hill

Restoration is our first suggestion for a good wood door. Sometimes it is not the right call. Replacement makes sense when the bottom rail and stiles are rotted through, when glued joints have failed in several places, or when the door has warped so far that it will not seal no matter how the hinges are set.

A common choice is a fiberglass door with a woodgrain finish. It can be stained to look close to wood, and it does not swell, split or rot. Steel is another option when security and price matter more than the look. If the frame is also soft at the bottom, it is better to replace the door and frame together than to hang a new slab in a failing jamb. Our Richmond Hill door frame replacement page explains how that works.

Measurement for replacement doors is free. You can read more about the installation side on our door installation page, and if you have aluminum storefront or glass doors at a business in town, see aluminum and glass door repair in Richmond Hill.

Richmond Hill Wood Door FAQ

Can you restore a wood door without taking it off site?

Many repairs, like hinge work, planing, joint repairs and small rot repairs, are done on site. Full refinishing goes best with the door off its hinges so every edge can be sealed. We will explain the options and how the opening stays secure while the work is done.

My wooden garage door has a soft bottom panel. Does the whole door need replacing?

Not usually. If the rot is limited to the bottom section, that section can often be repaired or replaced on its own. The springs then need to be rebalanced for the new weight.

Do you install new interior doors as well as repair them?

Yes. We fit new interior slabs and pre-hung doors, including solid core and French doors, and we repair existing ones that stick, rub or will not latch.

Do you cover all of Richmond Hill?

Yes, from Langstaff and Richvale in the south up through Mill Pond, Jefferson and Oak Ridges to the north end of town.
