Wood Door Repair Service in Hamilton: Fix the Joint, Not Just the Look
A wood door is a frame of stiles and rails, glued and joined at the corners, with panels or glass floating in between. Almost every serious wood door problem starts at one of those joints. Paint and stain can hide trouble for years, so before we talk about finishes, here is what we check on any wood door in Hamilton.
Loose corner joints
When the glue fails at a corner, the door racks out of square. The latch side drops, a gap opens along the top, and you may see a hairline crack in the paint where the rail meets the stile. Older doors in Kirkendall, Durand and Westdale are often joined with mortise and tenon joints, which can be cleaned out, re-glued, clamped and pinned. That repair brings the door back to square and usually saves it.
Split or shrunken panels
Panels are meant to float in their grooves so the wood can move. When they get painted solid to the frame, they cannot move, and they split in the first dry winter. A split panel can be glued and filled, or replaced with new stock if it is badly damaged.
Worn hinge and lock areas
Many old wood doors have been fitted with three or four different locks over the years. That leaves the latch stile chewed up with old holes. We patch the old cut-outs with glued-in wood (a dutchman patch), then fit the new lock into solid material. Stripped hinge screw holes get the same treatment, so the hinges hold properly.
Rot along the bottom rail
The bottom rail takes the splash from rain and snow. On exterior doors without a good drip edge or sweep, it soaks up water through the end grain. Small areas of rot can be cut out and rebuilt. If the rot reaches into the joints at both corners, the door is usually a replacement candidate.

Wood Door Staining Services
Stain is not paint. It soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top, which means it can only go onto bare, clean wood. That is the most important thing to understand about staining a door.
Why you cannot stain over an old finish
If a door still has varnish or polyurethane on it, stain will sit on the surface, stay tacky and wipe off unevenly. Before a door can be re-stained, the old finish has to be stripped or sanded off completely, including in the panel profiles and around the glass. That prep is where most of the work is.
Getting the colour right
Different species take stain very differently. Oak and mahogany take it evenly. Pine and fir blotch unless the wood is pre-conditioned first. Old wood that has been under finish for decades has also darkened on its own. We test the stain on a hidden area, usually the top or hinge edge, before committing to the whole door. If you are trying to match a door to existing trim, bring us a piece of the trim or show us where it is. Our general wood door repair page has more on finishes and repairs.
The clear coat matters more than the stain
Stain gives colour. The clear coat on top gives protection. On an exterior door, it must be an exterior-rated product with UV protection, applied in enough coats to build a real film. A door facing south or west in Hamilton gets a lot of direct sun and will need recoating more often than a north-facing door under a porch roof.
Interior Door Refinishing Near You in Hamilton
Hamilton’s older housing stock has a lot of original interior doors: four-panel and five-panel fir and pine doors, glass-panel French doors, and solid hardwood doors in the larger homes around Durand and the west end. Many have been painted many times over.
Strip or repaint?
- Repaint when the door is going to stay painted. Sand the existing paint smooth, fill dents, prime and topcoat. It is faster and costs less.
- Strip when you want the wood visible again, or when paint build-up has made the door so thick it no longer closes. Stripping is slow work, especially on panel profiles, but the result on an old fir door can be excellent.
A note on old paint
Paint in homes built before 1960 can contain lead. Old layers should not be dry-sanded or burned off indoors. If you are not sure what is on your doors, ask before any stripping starts, and plan the work so dust does not spread through the house.
Doors that rub after refinishing
A door that closed fine before can rub after a few new coats, especially at the latch edge. A light planing of the edge and a hinge adjustment take care of it. That edge should then be sealed again so it does not soak up moisture.
Wooden Door Replacement in Hamilton
Some doors are not worth saving: rot in several joints, a deep warp, or a cheap veneered door that has delaminated. Replacement is the right call there. With older Hamilton homes, the challenge is that openings are often not standard sizes. A stock slab may need to be trimmed, or a door may need to be made to size. Exterior wood doors that are being replaced are often swapped for fiberglass with a woodgrain finish, which can be stained but will not rot.
If the frame is soft or out of square, it should be repaired or replaced at the same time. Our exterior door frame repair in Hamilton page explains the options, and door installation in Hamilton covers the installation side.

Hamilton Wood Door Repair FAQ
Can a wood door that has gone out of square be fixed?
Often, yes. If the corner joints have loosened, they can be re-glued, clamped and pinned to bring the door back to square. If the wood itself has warped, the options are more limited.
Can you stain a door that is currently painted?
Only after the paint is completely stripped. Some woods look good stained after stripping and some do not, so we check a test area first and tell you honestly.
Do you refinish interior doors as well as exterior ones?
Yes. We refinish, strip and repaint interior doors, and we repair the hinges, latches and joints on them at the same visit.
How do I know if my wood door should be replaced instead?
Press the bottom corners and rail with a screwdriver. If the wood is soft in several places, or the door is badly warped, replacement is usually the better value. We will tell you at the free estimate.
